Karlstad overview

Karlstad, in Varmland County, is situated on the mouth of the Klaralven River in south-central Sweden, overlooking the illustrious Lake Vanern. The city is renowned for its sunshine, boasting one of the sunniest climates in Scandinavia. Be wary though as during times of rain or even overcast weather, Karlstad and its locals can become somewhat of a downer. The city is home to a number of interesting examples of traditional Swedish architecture, and several alluring attractions, such as Karlstad Cathedral, Varmland Museum, and Marienergsskogen Leisure Park. Still, unless travelers plan to use Karlstad as a base for exploring surreal natural landscapes of the Varmland region, avoid spending more than a few days in the city…everything can be seen in less than two! Conversely, the city usually begins to rev-up during February, as the famous Swedish rally comes to Varmland. Hotels and other tourist-related services should be booked well in advance.
